Visiting Scholars
Byung-Jae Kang, DVM, PhD, DAiCVS, DKCVS
Professor of Small Animal Surgery
College of Veterinary Medicine, Seoul National University, South Korea
Dr. Kang is a Professor of Small Animal Surgery at Seoul National University, specializing in veterinary orthopedics and neurosurgery. He earned his DVM and PhD from Seoul National University and completed postdoctoral research training at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University. His research focuses on developing innovative surgical techniques and therapeutic approaches for musculoskeletal and spinal disorders in small animals. His primary research interests include orthopedic implant design and biomechanical evaluation, patient-specific 3D-printed implants, and regenerative medicine using stem cells and tissue engineering for bone, cartilage, and tendon repair. He is also interested in minimally invasive spinal surgery, particularly uniportal endoscopic spine surgery in dogs and cats. During his visiting scholar appointment at UC Davis, he is focusing on advancing his expertise in minimally invasive spinal surgery and exploring opportunities for collaborative research in veterinary orthopedics and neurosurgery.
Shima Roayaee, DVM
Shima Roayaee holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree and has a research background in large animal internal medicine and equine clinical pharmacology. She joined the Reesink Lab in 2025 as a visiting scholar where her research focuses on equine tendon biomechanics and the development of ex vivo experimental models to investigate tendon damage and mechanical properties. Her broader research interests include equine musculoskeletal disorders, clinical pharmacology, respiratory medicine, and regenerative veterinary medicine.
